I started martial arts when I was in my forties and here are my "lessons learned" for adult beginners.
Stretch, Stretch & Stretch Some More - You are not 15 any more! As you age, your muscles and tendons become less flexible. In other words, it is easier to hurt yourself. Remember to stretch at home before you go to Taekwondo and stretch at your Taekwondo class. I even stretch at work in order to prep for my evening Taekwondo classes. Concentrate on all areas of your body but put increased emphasis on your legs and any of your individual "problem areas". Visit our stretching page for Taekwondo stretching suggestions.
Talk to the Master - Most Masters/Instructors are very accommodating ....
I look back and can still remember the first Martial Arts class I took. I walked Into a lobby and was kindly greeted by the receptionist. My father proceeded to tell her that he was wanting me to try out a class and It was our first time In a martial arts school. As he spoke to her I can remember the curiosity running through my mind and then looking out to the ongoing class and thinking can I do that? I then proceeded to my first class that same night, I was greeted by all of the Instructors and a few students. This academy has changed my son's life. He has excelled in school to become a straight A student, his attitude and self confidence has completely changed for the better, and he is doing amazing in his TaeKwonDo classes. I'm thankfully every day for these instructors, the staff, and this academy.
